The Oak and the Acorn was commissioned by the Huntington Community Band (Huntington, N.Y.) in celebration of their 80th Anniversary. This composition is a musical allegory that reflects on who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.

Through a dynamic showcase of the wind band, the piece explores the enduring legacy of a mighty forest giant alongside the vibrant, untapped potential of the tiny seed that follows. It is both a tribute to the deep history of this organization and a hopeful celebration of the new generation that will carry its traditions forward.

The programmatic journey begins with an immediate sense of grandeur, rooted in the deep, resonant timbres of the timpani, low woodwinds, and low brass. Out of this foundation, the upper brass paints a sweeping, pastoral vision, placing the listener squarely in a serene landscape. From here, the story of the mighty oak emerges with a lyrical yet majestic theme that steadily grows into a massive, full-ensemble texture, representing the sheer size and strength of the fully grown tree. A striking two-chord motif soon follows, featuring flutes and piccolo trilling to mimic birds in the canopy alongside a heroic trumpet fanfare. The texture then strips away to a simple, reverent chorale representing the tree's fragile early years. As the oak ages and grows, the music thickens around it until a sudden key change signals a shift in the wind, and the flutes and oboes beautifully echo the pastoral motif we first heard in the brass.

Suddenly, the music shifts gears. A bright, immediate change in tempo and energy introduces the motif of the acorn. Propelling forward with the boundless, rhythmic enthusiasm of a young soul, this section represents the youth and the future of the ensemble. Following this energetic burst, the piece transitions into a slower, deeply endearing duet between the oboe and euphonium. This tender moment gradually blossoms as the entire brass section takes over the theme, playing with profound warmth and full sonority.

In the final sections of the piece, the first theme of the mighty oak returns, but it has been transformed—imbued with the lively, driving spirit of the acorn. Fragments of earlier oak themes are interjected throughout, creating a powerful fusion characterized

by a relentless rhythmic drive shared across the entire ensemble. This synergy demonstrates that the past and the future are strongest when working together. The piece ultimately drives toward a rousing, stately recapitulation of the acorn theme before concluding with a thunderous, dramatic finish. It serves as a powerful musical promise: while the mighty oak stands tall today, the roots of tomorrow

are already firmly planted.
