Since beginning my doctorate, I’ve been trying to expand my composition palette when it comes to timbres and textures for percussion. When I look back at my earlier compositions, I acknowledge that my ability to write for percussion was the equivalent of painting a masterpiece with only a handful of colors. If I had to reflect on my abilities as a wind band composer, I would say that one of the areas I’m working to grow in is the ability to use a variety of different percussion instruments and percussion techniques to enhance my compositions.
In my opinion, there are limitless possibilities when it comes to timbres in the percussion world. I am looking forward to discovering and experimenting first-hand with different instruments, mallets, techniques, and other approaches to create a unique aura for the listener.
