Program Notes

Whispers of the Coast —“Susurra de la Costa” in Spanish—draws inspiration from the stunning shores of Cancún, Mexico, blending the serene
beauty of its coast with the vibrant cultural legacy of the ancient Mayans. Rooted in their musical traditions, which often utilized anhemitonic
pentatonic scales to suit the distinct timbres of wind instruments, this composition crafts a soundscape that reflects both nature and heritage.

The piece begins with a tranquil introduction, setting a peaceful scene of sunlit sands and gentle waves. A breathy tenor saxophone emerges as a
coastal breeze, while piano and electric guitar weave a dialogue shaped by the Fibonacci sequence, evoking natural patterns. The bowed vibraphone
casts radiant overtones, like sunlight shimmering on water. Later, rhythmic motifs derived from “Cancún” and “Quintana Roo” unfold, layered with
textures symbolizing water, wind, and heart—core Mayan elements. A dramatic shift introduces a hurricane’s chaos, with multiphonics and aleatoric structures painting nature’s untamed power. Whispers from the Coast invites listeners to explore this duality of calm and storm, leaving its deeper mysteries to unfold in sound.
